On September 20, 2013, over 120 advocates, survivors, and activists from across western Massachusetts gathered for a day-long summit on Advancing the Economic Security of Survivors of Domestic and Sexual Violence, sponsored by The Massachusetts Rural Domestic and Sexual Violence Project of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Jane Doe Inc., the Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. The summit featured: keynote speakers Sarah Gonzalez Bocinski of Wider Opportunities for Women and Dr. Loretta Pyles of SUNY Albany; an incredible survivor speaker; workshops on innovative programs in Massachusetts, increasing job opportunities in rural areas, addressing the economic impact of sexual trauma, how to be an effective community organizer, and the ins and outs of policy advocacy; an overview of the Reach Up Massachusetts ballot initiatives; and a breakout session on the movement's next steps.
